Pyeroy Limited has won a £1 million contract for the supply and erection of scaffold access and containment systems to support a major refit programme on one of the Royal Navy’s biggest nuclear submarines, HMS Vigilant.

The submarine is in the Devonport Dockyard in Plymouth for a major refit and to refuel her nuclear power plant.

She is the third of the Royal Navy’s SSBN Vanguard Class ballistic missile submarines and, as such is part of the United Kingdom's strategic nuclear deterrent.

At 150 metres in length and displacing 16,000 tonnes, she is one of the largest submarines ever built for the Royal Navy and has a standard crew of nearly 140 men when in service.

The contract is the latest in a successful year for Pyeroy’s Marine Division.

Other recent orders have been won to provide painting, scaffolding, insulation and cleaning support at Babcock Marine’s Rosyth Dockyard on HMS Sutherland, HMS Monmouth and HMS Campbeltown.

Other contracts have been secured to provide painting and scaffolding work on RFA Fort George and RFA Fort Rosalie at the Birkenhead yard of North West Shiprepairers & Shipbuilders Ltd (NSL), now re-named Camel Lairds.

The firm is also in line to secure new business worth millions of pounds working as part of the team building the Royal Navy’s new generation of aircraft carriers.

It has formed a joint venture company with Cape Industrial Services, called Ship Support Services Ltd, which has been named as the preferred bidder by BVT Surface Fleet to undertake the access and specialist coatings work on the £3bn carriers’ contract.

If successful, the contract is likely to last seven years and will create or maintain hundreds of jobs within Scotland, the North East of England and Portsmouth.

Jack Hayton, director of Pyeroy’s Marine Division, said: “The HMS Vigilant sub-contract package was won against fierce competition and the award of this prestigious contract helps to maintain our status as a preferred contractor to Babcock and the Royal Navy.”

“Pyeroy have a long and success track record for safety and performance within the marine coatings industry, and through the hard work and skills of our management and workforce we are committed to build upon this proud tradition”.

“The market continues to be extremely challenging with constant pressure on delivery of cost improvements and efficiency, so we are particularly pleased with the relatively strong prospects and market share we currently enjoy within this sector.”
